Often when we hear the grass is greener on the other side we automatically think about relationships. You will hear yourself or your girlfriend say “he thinks the grass is greener with her than me, he will soon realize” or vice versa when it comes to men speaking about women. When I ask the question, “Is The Grass Greener On The Other Side?” I am referring to Corporate America versus Entrepreneurship. I have worked on both sides of the fence. I worked in Corporate for two years right after graduating from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. After two years I decided to build my business and go full-time as an entrepreneur. I have been successfully self-employed for fifteen years. There are people with the mindset that working for someone else is the end all be all but I wholeheartedly disagree. Think about how many acquisitions and mergers take place every year. At any moment, your job can be taken from you.
I have a client who started working with me to grow her business and at the same time was very successful in a professional career. She was very high up, managing a large department. Five months after she began working with me, she lost her job due to an acquisition and it was easy to let her go. They gave her a severance package because her salary was so high they did not want to continue to pay her. However, it didn’t bother her nor did she miss a beat because she was building her own business.
There are so many people who have been caught up in situations like this that I know. Most people are raised to work for someone else. I was taught, go to school, graduate from college, work and retire from corporate America. I was not taught to be an entrepreneur, it was something that I learned. But, even as a little girl I was always selling something, so I honestly believe it must have always been in me.
Being a Business Coach, I realize there are many people that are just trying to figure it out. Should they stay in Corporate America or should they leave? Should they build a business or should they not? I read a great article written by R. Kay Green titled, “Corporate America vs Entrepreneurship? Which Path is Right for You? [To read the entire article go to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/r-kay-green/corporate-america-v-entre_b_4605361.html. ]
The article’s most impactful statement for me was, “While there is no “perfect” environment, whether corporate or entrepreneurial, we must be honest with ourselves when selecting the path that works for us. In order to survive, in either arena, you must possess, or at a minimum, develop the relevant survival skills on a corporate or entrepreneurial level.” This statement stood out to me for the simple reason that people go into corporate America thinking it is going to be easy or they start businesses thinking it is going to be easy. Either choice will take hard work if you desire to be successful. You must ask yourself, “do you want to build someone else’s brand or do you want to build your own?”
The question is, “Is The Grass Greener On The Other Side”?
